‘Post-truth’ was Oxford’s word of the year for 2016, & ‘Fake News’ Collins’s word of the year for 2017. But what do these words mean, and is there a definite cause for alarm that they signify? Or are they just convenient baskets in which to put almost everything that we find alarming about contemporary times? In this lecture Professor Simon Blackburn will talk a little about what philosophers of language have found to say about the family of notions connected with truth, and therefore about truth itself. The results are both surprising, and, when properly understood, reassuring.
