Thursday, 19 April 2018
Welcome to Brookings!

Thursday is a travel day for the vast majority of members, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t be prepared to show you some hospitality that evening. There will be times coordinated for some executive council meetings, but for the most part, we just want you to show up, enjoy some fellowship, and get ready for a busy couple of days ahead!

Friday, 20 April 2018 Friday kicks off with a bang as we open for registration at 08:00 and we present a nationally recognized speaker from the John Maxwell leadership team, Lefford Fate, promptly at 10:00. A prior service E9 with the United States Air Force, Mr. Fate brings a wealth of knowledge in mentorship, organizational excellence, and a message that will appeal to junior and senior leaders in our organization alike. All attendees, both military and civilian, are invited to attend.

The Junior Officer Professional Development (JOPD) committee will be hosting its meeting beginning at 0800, as well, and will roll right into the presentation at 1000.

Uniform: ACU (military) or business casual (civilian).

After lunch, the business session kicks off at 13:00 in Conference Rooms A-D. You’ll know you’re in the right place because you will see our vendor partners and a registration table right outside!

Uniform: ACU (military) or business casual (civilian).

Coffee for all of our breaks will be sponsored by a different local coffee company, so be prepared to enjoy some excellent local coffee throughout the conference!

While business is going on, the spouses, guests, and children of our members will have access to an exciting afternoon with the following activities:

Child care opens at 10:00 and will be available until 23:30 that evening.

At 10:30, Brookings Area Transit Authority (BATA) will transport children (chaperones provided) wanting to attend a field trip to the Brookings Children’s Museum! They will return at noon, just in time for lunch.

At 13:00, spouses and guests will be shuttled by BATA to Wooden Legs Brewery where they will have until 16:00 to enjoy some fellowship, some creative painting, and some delicious wine or micro-brewed beer. Cost for this is $35.00 and is payable at the event.

At 14:00, the Days Inn Waterpark will be opened to children and will continue operating until 17:00 when a pizza and movie party commences for their entertainment.

At 16:30 our Hospitality Room reopens (following close of business for the day), and members and their guests have until 20:30 to enjoy some drinks and social time while getting ready for the entertainment for the evening. Members and their guests can also dine at any of a myriad of great establishments in the Brookings Community, many within a short distance from the hotel.

At 20:00, the social event for the evening kicks off with the hors d’ouevres bar in Conference A-D for those who want a little something to nibble on while they wait for the entertainment to begin.

At 21:00, Just Duet! Dueling Pianos will hit the stage in Conference A-D and provide a high energy show filled with laughter and familiar songs. The best part is that YOU get to be the DJ! They have performed across the Midwest for over five (5) years, and as an added bonus, 50% of all tips given that evening will be donated back toward the charity of our choosing! They are prepared to play until midnight, and the hospitality room will reopen at 23:00 for those who want to leave the show early.

During the show, we will be holding a Star Wars costume contest to drive home the spirit of the conference! Whether you are an aspiring Jedi Knight, an Imperial storm trooper on R&R, or a bounty hunter in pursuit of galactic smugglers, we are excited to see your best costume! Prizes will be given for:

Best overall costume Best team costume Ugliest alien

So brush off your best Star Wars finery and prepare for a great Friday night! If you won’t be costuming up, fear not – casual clothing is suggested for those just coming to enjoy a good evening of laughter and fellowship.

Saturday, 21 April 2018 The next morning will feature our Company Grade breakfast (from 0730-0900) and a fun run around through campus (beginning at 0700) for those interested in enjoying some of the sites central to Brookings’ history as a college community. The Fun Run is available at an additional cost during registration, and it will finish right outside one of our coffee sponsor’s shops (Choco Latte) for a quick shot of caffeine, a delicious scone or muffin, and a short walk back to the hotel for the rest of the day’s activities.

Childcare begins promptly at 08:00, and the business session starts back up at 09:00.

Uniform: ACU (military) or business casual (civilian).

For the kids that morning, the SDSU Climbing Wall will be a fun option to enjoy the Wellness Center on campus, or the kids can have a lazy day at the waterpark (suggested for ages 7 and up).

Once the business session completes on or around 11:30, members and their families will have an opportunity to enjoy lunch and get ready for a busy afternoon that will take them all over this historic and wonderful community.

Uniform: Uniform for the afternoon is casual; remember to bring warm clothes and coats in case of chilly weather, especially for the scavenger hunt and trap shoot. Transportation will be provided between places

At 13:30, adult options include a Trap Shoot (ages 16 and up), a Bean Bag Tournament (held at the Brookings Armory for ages 13 and up), and the traditional Poker Tournament (held at VFW Post 2118 for ages 21 and over).

For the kids, we have organized a bowling trip to Prairie Lanes for the afternoon - shoes and games are covered, and we will even have a prize for the top bowler of the afternoon!

For both adults and kids, we have put together an “Amazing Race” style scavenger hunt all across Brookings, with historical facts, key locations within the city, and some great prizes for the winning team! Each station will consist of either a physical challenge or a riddle that must be solved before you get the next clue, so come prepared! All movement will be tracked via social media by utilizing the tag #NGASD2018, so whether you’re at the Campanile or taking a stroll down main street to visit Nick’s Hamburger Shop, we will be watching Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for your story!

By 16:00, all roads will lead to the VFW Post 2118 where BATA will once again be there to shuttle you to the Sanford Jackrabbits Athletic Center (SJAC) where we will have the opportunity to watch the bitter rivalry between the 109th RSG and the 196th MEB unfold at the “Jacks Face Off”! An Ultimate Football match will ensue with up to twelve (12) members per team competing for bragging rights and an award to be given out later that evening.

At 18:00, BATA will take us all back to the hotel to get ready for the culminating event for the weekend…

As April is the Month of the Military Child, the 139th BSB will be hosting a unique banquet in their honor with the “Last Night on Yavin 4” Prom! This event gives parents the opportunity to have a formal dinner with their military children, enjoy some dance time with their kids, and participate in an awards ceremony celebrating the contributions that the military child gives in support of their parent or parents. A disk jockey will be providing the
music for the evening, and the event culminates with an awards ceremony (modeled after the ceremony in the original Star Wars) where we recognize not only the winners of the afternoon’s activities, but also pay special tribute to the military children sharing this weekend with us!

Uniform: Business Dress (the prom theme allows for you to go as far as you want to with the dress up – we would rather see you there in business casual than to not see you because you feel underdressed!)

After a dance or two, the event will officially close and the hospitality room will provide a final opportunity for members and their guests to hang out, unwind, and reflect on another great weekend as a member of the National Guard Association of South Dakota!

The 139th BSB is looking forward to hosting you this April, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to either Major Rebecca Trygstad (rebecca.k.trygstad.mil@mail.mil) or Captain Shane Skinner (shane.r.skinner.mil@mail.mil) for clarification.

And as always…
