// Roy Patterson & Sundar Viswanathan
Of vocalist/saxophonist Sundar Viswanathan, Brad Walseth of JazzChicago.net says “I receive numerous vocal jazz releases, and it takes a special singer to make me take notice”, and the Toronto Star describes his voice as an appealing “cross between Kurt Elling and Chet Baker”. The Globe and Mail compliments guitarist Roy Patterson: “Every note that he plays seems to have a purpose and a place, and both purpose and place usually have something to do with melody.” Viswanathan and Patterson have a history of collaboration, with a focus on the lyrical, sensual music of Bossa Nova. Tonight, “Night of Ballads and Bossas”, will showcase the music of not only the great Antonio Carlos Jobim, but will also feature ‘gentler’ ballad compositions by the legendary Duke Ellington, interpreted both vocally and instrumentally. The intimate setting of the Burdock provides the perfect canvas for the nuanced moods and emotional depth of this masterful music. Viswanathan and Patterson are joined by wonderful Toronto-based musicians: bassist Michael Herring and drummer/percussionist Max Senitt.
