Using ethnic and modern instruments and authentic vocal styling, the 6-member group Balkan Fields brings to life the rich diversity of dance and concert music of the Balkans: Bulgarian, Serbian, Romani, Macedonian, Albanian and Romanian traditions. Vocalist Melinda Hunt hails from the NYC Balkan/American musical community, where she often appears as a soloist with the celebrated brass band Zlatne Uste. The group’s leader, Melinda Fields, is a Classically trained pianist from eastern CT whose passion for the music of the Balkans led her to adopt the piano accordion as her performance instrument, studying for some time with the legendary Bulgarian accordionist Ivan Milev. Three members of the group are well-known locally in a number of other Balkan groups: Ralph Iverson (gadulka, violin, sax), Dean Brown (guitar, tambura) and Henry Goldberg (tupan, dombek, riq, vocals). Bass player/composer Mel Fitzhugh, a resident of Somerville, performs in a large number of musical traditions in the greater Boston area. Balkan Fields has performed extensively up and down the eastern seaboard, with appearances at NEFFA and Golden Festival, and for world music enthusiasts in Schenectady NY, Philadelphia PA, Princeton NJ and New Haven CT. This is the group’s first appearance at The Burren.
