Gemma O’Brien is an Australian artist specialising in lettering and illustration. Her typographic work takes on a range of mediums and techniques, from small calligraphic pieces to large scale hand-painted murals. Gemma is in Oslo, giving a lecture at Grilldagen 2018, and we have the pleasure to invite to a workshop!
This introductory class will focus on two different modes of letterform creation: writing and drawing. Participants will begin with a series of observational drawing exercises using only pencil and paper before moving onto calligraphic exercises with brush pen, and blackletter alphabets with balsa wood and ink. This class is designed to give participants a broad understanding of the principles of letterform creation through demonstrations and techniques used by Gemma O’Brien in her own practice. Through experimentation, one-on-one guidance, and critical discussion among peers, participants will leave with a set of tools and techniques to continue to explore hand lettering at home.
The workshop is now full, but send a email to: firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to be on the waiting list!
Price: 750kr (This includes paper, brush pens, fine liner marker and ink)
All you have to bring: eraser, B pencil, pencil sharpener and a ruler.
Students are encouraged to bring a word (a name, favourite word, season or place) to develop and refine in one of the two styles we explore in the class. We also encourage the attendees to bring their own favourite fine-liner markers, notepads, mechanical pencils or any specific drawing tools they love and use in their own practice.
