The gigantic prehistoric monuments of Grange ‘B’ Stone Circle in Co. Limerick, Beltany Stone Circle in Co. Donegal and the lost post-enclosure at Lismullin, Co. Meath, were erected during the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age respectively. Available archaeological evidence indicates a lack of human burial or habitation within their boundaries. When combined with the findings from other specialist investigations and reports on these monuments, their alternative use as sacred places for gathering, ceremony and ritual can be legitimately argued. Architecturally, they were unroofed and open to the sky, allowing for the additional idea that the cosmos, especially the night sky, was an intrinsic element of these prehistoric examples of spatial ceremonial infrastructure. This richly illustrated talk will explore these claims.
