The Great Vigil of Easter, 8pm - Calvary Church
Service begins outside Calvary Church at 277 Park Avenue South at East 21st Street
The Great Vigil of Easter is the central service of the Christian year. The service begins on the steps of Calvary Church, where a great fire is lit. The service continues in the dark church, where readings of solemn prophecies of the Old Testament recall God’s saving deeds in history. The Great Vigil continues with a baptism. Suddenly, the church is flooded in light, the organ blasts and chimes ring out, the news is shouted throughout the church: Christ is risen! The choir and congregation join in singing the joyful Easter hymn: Jesus Christ is risen today!
