PARTICIPANTS ATTEND BOTH DATES.

The gold standard for cycling or recreation and commuting, this comprehensive on-bike course covers everything you need to know to ride around Thunder Bay’s multi-use trails and residential and collector roads. Participants will learn how to be maneuverable, visible, predictable, and to communicate with other road users. Bicycles and helmets required. Please also bring a water bottle and snacks.

Content includes:

-Safe Cycling Theory presentation, including the rules of the road, defensive riding techniques, clothing, nutrition, cycling infrastructure, and residential riding.

-Participants practice fitting and conducting safety checks on their helmets and bicycles

-Handling skills: straight line riding, shoulder checks, signals, braking, gearing, slalom. Students who want more of a challenge can request to practice advanced skills: rock dodge, threshold braking, figure 8, quick turn.

-Approximately 45-minute group ride on residential roads and multi-use trails that practices right and left turns, stops, positioning in lanes and at intersections, right of way, and driving with parked cars. Students practice leading and receive feedback about their riding. Students who want more of a challenge can request to practice collector roads.
