At one point or another all of us have or will experience the death of a close loved one or spouse. The stages of grief we undergo as we heal are examined through the poignant yet humorous interactions of three close friends in “The Cemetery Club” by Ivan Menchell. Three Jewish women who have been friends their entire lives seek to comfort and guide each other through the mourning of their dead husbands by meeting once a month for tea and a trip to the cemetery to visit their husband’s graves. Lucille, whose outwardly gregarious behavior belies her inner sadness, epitomizes denial. Doris, with her sharp tongue and quick wit exhibits anger. And acceptance manifests itself through sweet Ida who begins to question during the play whether or not it is perhaps time to move forward with her life. Things get complicated when Sam the butcher, who is also a widower comes on the scene and the women vie for his attention. Audiences will be moved to laugh and cry as they follow these women’s journey through grief.
