- CURYJ Presents -
5th Annual Reclaiming Cinco de Mayo: Breaking Down Bars, Building Our Dreams! On May 6th we will close out a Week of Love, Rage and Resistance with an outdoor concert, resource tables, vendors, and artistic activities for All Ages!

- Why Reclaim Cinco de Mayo? -
Reclaiming Cinco de Mayo is held to counter the consumer-driven culture being built around the Battle of Puebla, especially during a time of heightened displacement and mass incarceration. Cinco de Mayo has been popularized in the U.S. as a holiday to buy and consume alcohol with full disregard to Mexican culture, when it truly stems from a revolutionary moment in history. During the Battle in 1862, a small community of grassroots soldiers claimed victory over a heavily armed French military of thousands. By refocusing on this fact, we strive to deepen cultural roots and the spirit of community organizing. This event will be alcohol free!

- We enCURYJ you to bring -
Your family, a blanket and full picnic basket, donations for goodies that may catch your eye, comfortable clothing for morning yoga or Zumba, and your dancing shoes!

- This is an Inside-Out Event -
Following in the spirit of community organization that won the Battle of Puebla, CURYJ works to close youth prisons and build youth leaders in the Fruitvale District of Oakland. This years annual RCDM event is themed in solidarity with local (currently incarcerated) youth's event themed "Breaking Down Walls, Building Peace B4 War".
