Heart & Soul is a Solo Exhibition by our very own Artist in Residence Shanna Glawson. Shanna is an artist, craftsman, maker, and promoter of the arts through education. She received her degree in Professional Crafts: Silversmithing from Haywood Community College, and her Bachelors in Fine Arts:Sculpture from UNC Asheville. She primarily concentrates on working with wood, metal, and mixed media. Having resided in Salisbury since January 2018, she has taught art classes through Rowan Helping Ministries, Barnabus, and Center for Faith & Arts. As an educator she strives to cultivate student growth through the exploration of art via a curriculum that incorporates creativity, observation, and discovery.
By using the universally recognized ♡ symbol, Shanna Glawson’s art speaks to all cultures and people. Heart ideograms have been especially vital to religions such as ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and more. They use both the imagery and the existence of the physical heart to represent emotional and spiritual qualities. These ideas subtly manifest themselves in Shanna’s artwork through the allegorical alterations of the physical and metaphysical by using both the anatomical heart and cordiform shape.
