Ever wondered how life fits within Earth's complex physical and ecological systems? Or, how the actions of one species affect other living things and the global environment?

An entertaining speaker and popular with CAT students, Professor David Wilkinson from Lincoln University will be exploring these topics in a talk entitled 'Gaia - ecology at a global scale?' Dave will explore 'Earth-system science', which was developed to test the Gaia hypothesis of James Lovelock, with whom David has worked. To what extent is Gaia true and what are the main criticisms of it?

Previously, a Reader in Environmental Science at Liverpool John Moores University, Dave has wide interests in biology, environmental science and the history of science. His theoretical work has concentrated on areas of evolutionary ecology, biogeography and the Earth System (Gaia).

David is the author of 150 scientific papers and the books 'Fundamental Processes In Ecology: an Earth Systems Approach' (OUP) and 'Big Questions in Ecology and Evolution' (with Tom Sherratt, OUP), and was a recipient of the Marsh Ecology Book of the Year prize (British Ecological Society, 2007).
