Tampa, FL (March 26 – April 6, 2018)
The Centre Gallery at USF is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by artist and USF Alumni Courtney Alexander. From Dust to Onyx celebrates the beauty and complexity of black culture. Alexander is a multimedia artist, creative director, and writer with a Bachelor’s in Studio Art from the University of South Florida. In her past work she dug into issues of duality, hyper-sexuality, and self-awareness; a much more personal dialogue which served to create vulnerability and explore the complex nature of her existence. Mixed media art has become the way for Alexander to tangibly arrange these different aspects of her existence into a whole. Dust +II Onyx: A Melanated Tarot is a natural progression in her exploration of identity. Through tarot cards, viewers can explore the infinite ways this series can be rearranged, building and changing the interrelationships between each card as a compelling tool for healing, empowerment, and social justice.
The cards feature 78 mixed media collage paintings accented with metallic and holographic foils, featuring cultural myths, symbolism, history and icons within the Black Diaspora. These paintings have been published as a tarot deck and the guidebook features multiple keyword lists (numerological, elemental and astrological) and full color images of the artwork with unique titles and art descriptions. Each card has been carefully researched with nearly 75 resources cited, providing a wealth of educational material.
Our opening reception, DessART, will be the first Monday of the show March 26th from 12-1 pm. Dessert and refreshments will be provided. The artist will also be on-site March 30 during USF Art Walk, which takes place inside and outside of the gallery from 7- 11 pm. The Closing Reception will be held on Friday, April 6th from 7-9 pm. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. All Centre Gallery exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public.
