The department is looking for volunteers to help with Picnic Day, which takes place on Saturday, April 21. This year the department, in collaboration with the Chemistry Club, will put on 4 chemistry shows in Rock Hall at 10:00, 11:30, 1:00, and 2:30, and will have hands-on chemistry exhibits set up in the courtyard from 10:00 - 3:30 (weather permitting).
People can volunteer in one of three roles: Show performers, Show Ushers, and Table Demo performers. All volunteers will be offered 2 tickets to one of the shows in Rock Hall. We will do our best to make sure everyone receives tickets to the show they want, but we may need some people to be flexible so that we have enough tickets available. More information about each of these opportunities, and the sign up sheet, are provided below. If you're interested in volunteering, please read this information carefully!
1.) Picnic Day Show Performers: Anyone performing demonstrations at a show on Picnic Day must satisfy the following criteria:
They must be current on Lab Safety Fundamentals training (+ cryogens if applicable). Morgan must have a copy of their training certificate(s)- they can be emailed to her at firstname.lastname@example.org
If they have not already attended a demo training, they must attend the general demo training on 4/12, 1:30-3:30 pm in the Courtyard .
They must attend one of the two Picnic Day specific training sessions in the courtyard: 4/13 1:30-3:30 pm OR 4/16 10-12 am.
They must attend the dress rehearsal in Rock Hall on 4/20 from 6pm-9pm. It may be possible for them to attend one half (either 6-7:30 or 7:30-9), but more information on that will be provided at the picnic-day specific trainings.
To sign up, place your name in the sign-up sheet for the shows desired, and add your name and email address on the second sheet. Preference will be given to people with more experience, and to people who can do both morning shows or both afternoon shows. Anyone who signs up but does not meet the criteria will be removed from the list.
2.) Show Ushers: Ushers will assist with seating in Rock Hall before the show and with clearing Rock Hall afterwards. Ushers will be able to watch the show during the performance, but may need to assist anyone who needs to exit. Ushers need to briefly attend the rehearsal in Rock Hall on Friday, 4/20 to receive further instructions from Debbie Decker. To sign up, place your name in the sign-up sheet for the shows desired, and add your name and email address on the second sheet.
3.) Table Demo Performers: We will have three tables with small demonstrations set up in the courtyard during the day (weather permitting). Each table will be staffed by 2 volunteers who will perform and explain the demos. These are all simple demos that require no special training beyond the Lab Safety Fundamentals course (email certificate to Morgan Matson at email@example.com). It will be easy to observe how the demos are done on the day of the event; volunteers are asked to arrive 15 minutes early so they have time to learn. To sign up, place your name in the sign-up sheet for the shows desired, and add your name and email address on the second sheet.
