Often, our desire to see change doesn’t necessarily translate into taking effective action. Throughout history, change has happened when people are determined enough to fight even when the deck is stacked against them. That’s our task now — believing enough in our own power to override the odds. Wendy Davis’ talk will focus on how to effectively engage through our deeds and to sustain our efforts until we see success.

Senator Davis is the founder of Deeds Not Words, a nonprofit that encourages and provides tools for young women to turn ideas about women’s equality into action. She is a former Texas State Senator and gubernatorial candidate. Senator Davis became famous for her 11-hour-long filibuster in 2013 to block state Senate Bill 5, a measure which included more restrictive abortion regulations for Texas. Today, she is a champion for women’s rights and reproductive justice. Prior to entering state politics, she attended Harvard Law School to receive her J.D. She is the author of Forgetting to Be Afraid: A Memoir.
