en Most people will know Pavel Juráček (1935 - 1989) as one of the important Czech filmmakers of the 20th century, though he even more excelled in screenwriting. Before entering the film business he studied in the early fifties Czech and Journalism at the Charles University in Prague. Due to his bohemian way of living he was expelled from his study. During his study he cooperated with others by writing out themes and scenario's for their films.
Till 1970 Juráček would be active in the Barrandov studio's as screenwriter, dramaturg, director and as was head of one the creative groups. He made two films on his own Každý mladý muž (Every Young Man - 1965) and Případ pro zažínajícího kata (Case for a Rookie Hangman - 1969) and cooperated more than once with the director Jan Schmidt, with whom he for instance co-directed the short film Joseph Kilian (Postava k podpírání - 1963), which won the Grand Prize at ISFF Oberhausen and the FIPRESCI Prize at IFF Mannheim.
