TESTING GROUND: EXPERIMENTS IN DANCE is back. Now in it’s ninth year, it is a chance for dancers and choreographers to test out exciting new ideas in front of an audience.
Each show is very different, you’ll find that some of the works-in-progress are already quite polished and some are still quite fragile. You might want to offer some feedback on what you’ve seen and understood. You might want to chat to the choreographers about their ideas and how they do what they do. Most of all though– please come to have fun. Expect an informal evening with lots to think about and enjoy.
This April’s programme features a fantastic all-female line-up of ambitious artists:
YAMA DANCE COMPANY | Women, know your place!
A politically charged and playful reimagining of a beauty pageant, with Yama Dance‘s 17-strong company of female dancers over 60.
FULL TILT AERIAL | 21CD
A dance aerial work-in-progress from Full Tilt Aerial experimenting with a new piece of counterweight apparatus, asking how we can “unplug” and reconnect with ourselves.
LUCY WATERHOUSE | Schiele’s Women
A bold new female duet choreographed by Lucy Waterhouse exploring the voyeuristic eye of artist Schiele, translating his expressionistic and jarring depiction of the human body into movement.
ALICE SMITH | Indebted to Dance
A solo piece by bright young graduate Alice Smith, exploring the economy of values, putting the world of minimum wage work into a choreographic space.
HAZEL LAM | To The Lighthouse
Multi-disciplinary artist Hazel Lam brings dance and circus to her experimental work about solitude, abandonment and the departure of loved ones.
