"Life was always a challenge with our son, Daniel. He was born with a congenital heart defect. His first surgery was at five days old. He had many other surgeries. He was in the special education classes all through school. He was loving and caring to most people he met. His life expectancy was about 15 years of age. He lived to the age of 33.

At age 19, he moved out of out of his childhood home into a home with others who had special needs. His love of people continued to grow. One of the first stories I was told about Daniel, after he left home, was that at lunch, his table was the ‘cool’ table. The staff that worked with him and the others told me that Daniel and his friends made room at the ‘cool’ table for any one that wanted to join them."

As a community, we want to open the ‘cool’ table to all those individuals in the local area who have special needs.

The Clovis High Plains Rotary Club has teamed up with the Spectra staff at the Clovis Civic Center, Jocks on Wheels, and many other local service organizations to organize a Special Hearts Prom on March 24, 2018 in the Enchantment Ballroom.

For the second year in a row, the Clovis High Plains Rotary Club with the assistance of the Clovis Evening Lions Club and other community donors have created a magical night for the special people in the local community and are providing them with an opportunity to make new friends in a comfortable and inclusive atmosphere.

The Special Hearts Prom is an event for individuals with special needs and will include a catered meal followed by a dance. If you have a friend who should be invited, please call Ruby at (575) 935-5001 or Ronda at (575) 935-5004. Please RSVP by March 20, 2018.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with decorations and transportation for the event.

If you are interested in volunteering at the Special Hearts Prom, please join our FB group: Special Hearts Prom VOLUNTEER TEAM.

This year's theme is "Always Wear Your Cape" and volunteers will create a colorful and upbeat cityscape for the formal prom and all the superheroes that attend.
