To the Romans it was already so ancient they called it Antikaria. The Arabs modified it to Antaqira and today Antequera is a wealthy town both culturally and economically. Its location on the main crossroads of Seville-Granada and Malaga-Cordoba, made Antequera an important border fort between the Castilian and Granada kingdoms until the fall of Granada (1492) and by the 16th century it was one of Andalusia’s most important towns due to its trade activity.

Our Walking Tour with Carmen will start at the Dolmens, Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments that are one of the most remarkable architectural works of European prehistory and one of the most important examples of European Megalithism.

We’ll then continue to the lower part of Antequera where we’ll see the city centre, city hall and San Sebastian Church. We’ll finish in San Sebastian Square in time for lunch.

At 2.00pm we’ll recommence, walking through the upper part of Antequera along the Portichuelo and city walls to the Giants Arch and Saint Mary Church. Don’t forget your camera – the views are spectacular.

Around 3.00pm we’ll depart for nearby El Torcal de Antequera nature reserve with its more than 17 square kilometers of other-worldly rock formations. The landscape of the Sierra del Torcal mountain range is one of the most impressive karst fields in Europe. During the Jurassic Age around 150 million years ago the area between what are now the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea was underwater. Later this seabed was thrust upward more than 1300 meters to form a mountain range. Subsequent freezing, cracking, wind and water erosion carved the strata of these massive limestone blocks into ranks of weird and spectacular sculptures.
While we won’t have time to explore, we will stop here long enough for coffee and the chance to briefly view this fascinating area and its impressive mirador.
