This session shines light on the experiences and history of the immigration crisis in the Arizona region.
This session will begin with the film El Mar La Mar (Run time: 94 min). This film weaves together harrowing oral histories of migrants with hand processed 16mm images of flora, fauna and the items left behind by travelers. This film captures what it is truly like to travel across the Sonoran Desert on the US-Mexico border through sonically rich soundtracks and images. This film won the Caligari Film award; the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival, Universities Culturgest Award; and the 2017 IndieLisbon International Independent Film.
The second film, Dismantling Borders, Recovering Humanity, by the City of Surprise Youth Council (Run Time: 37 min), discusses the compelling investigative reports presented by the Surprise Youth Council and explores the humanitarian side of the immigration crisis on the Arizona boarder.
Following the second film there will be a panel discussion, featuring the City of Surprise Youth Council.
