This session explores the effects of incarceration on individuals caught up in the prison system, as well as the prospects for transformation through culture and meditation.
This session will begin with the film Out of State (Run Time: 1hr and 22 min). This film follows two Hawaiian men who were incarcerated and sent to an Arizona prison, where they were able to transform who they are through their own cultural practices. Their journey to recovery continues after being released and returned to Hawaii, where they battle pressures from the outside world. This film won Best Documentary Feature Film at the Cayman International Film Festival, the 2017 Liberty Bell Award, and the Best Made in Hawaii feature and Audience Choice Feature.
The second film is a short documentary, Path of Freedom (Run Time: 9 min). This film focuses on a group of fifty inmates who are using meditation to transform their lives. This film offers a glimpse into the lives of men reaching for forgiveness, inner peace, and freedom behind bars.
