Rockhounding for Amateurs is designed for the hobbyist, people with little or no geological training who have an interest in collecting NL minerals, rocks and fossils. How many of you have been walking along a beach, road or trail in NL and saw a beautiful rock, picked it up, and decided to bring it home to display, not knowing what type of rock it is, how it was made or where it came from. In this course we will address the basics of mineral, rock and fossil identification supplemented with hands on identification techniques. Students will cover the basics of NL geology and relate this knowledge to determine collecting areas around the province. Aspects of collecting etiquette, field safety, sample display and government regulatory issues related to the collection and protection of natural and fossil resources.
