It’s nearly that time….LOON DAY!!!
Loon Day is an annual event held by the Guild in May. The first several years the competition was for “loons only” but this year all birds will be included – puddle, divers, geese, confidence, and of course, LOONS! The competition is a donation in that the decoy itself acts as the entry fee. All decoys entered become property of the Guild.
For the Loon Day decoy competition, the judging will take place at the Harkers Island Bridge area with the decoys out in the water and the judges making their evaluations from the shore. The decoys are hidden before judging so they cannot be prejudged from a closer perspective.
The competition carries a $200 first prize cash award, a $100 cash award for second place, a $50 cash award for third place, and a $25 cash award for fourth place. Everyone is invited to participate, regardless of skill, as this is an event to benefit the Guild.
There will be a live auction of the competition decoys, including all the ribbon winners, as well as other decoys and items. We are looking forward to a fantastic auction!
The 3rd annual Loon Day Shorebird Competition kicks off shortly after floating the Loon Day birds. The rules are simple…carvers may enter any style or species shorebird they wish and will need to rig them for staking out on the beach. The birds will be judged from a distance of 15 feet, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be able to pick a bird to take home with them out of the entries as their reward. Please remember to also include a stand for your bird. All entries not taken by the winners will be auctioned off following the competition. In addition to this contest, there will be a special one day exhibit of antique Core Sound Geese and Brant! Anyone who wishes to bring a bird to display for the event may do so. There will be an opportunity for spectators to cast a vote for their favorite decoy! Show up around 10 am with your decoy to display. Decoys will be photographed and included in future Guild publications. For more information please contact Casey Arthur 252-241-8001.
Please plan now to join us at 10am on Saturday, May 12th, at the H. Curt Salter building on Harkers Island Road. Decoys must be entered by 10am and judging will start at 11am with the auction to follow. Please contact Bert Billings (910-279-7608) for competition rules and regulations, and if you are mailing your entry.
Come out and enjoy a great day of fun, fellowship, and food!!
