Our evening classes have been developed to provide an opportunity for creativity and gentle tuition and we hope the feeling of going home with a desire to learn. This 9 week evening class aims to equip you with the skills to create wonderful projects and inspire you to design and create your own pieces.

In the first 4 weeks we will learn specific techniques through 4 different projects but in the remaining 5 weeks, with the help of David, you will be able to design and make projects of your own.

Each session will last approx. 2 hours and don’t worry if you miss a week, there should be plenty of time for individual instruction. If you have been to any of the previous one day workshops that have been held at Created By Hand then, after a brief catch up, feel free to start off with your own projects from week one

Session 1 - Introduction (Make up to 2 pieces of jewellery)
On the first session we will learn some history about fusing and how to use some basic tools. After a short demonstration on how to score and break glass safely you will get to practice your cutting skills and once you feel comfortable we will cut and prepare glass to make your first piece of jewellery. There will be some examples of what can be made brought along on the night to inspire you. The cut pieces of glass will be taken away to fuse and mount and then returned to class in time for the second session.

Session 2 – Cutting Shapes and Inclusions (Make 2 x Coasters)
In this session we will recap briefly on cutting techniques and limitations of glass, we will learn more about tools used and explain how to cut curves and shapes. We will discuss what sort of materials can be fused into the glass and then, when you feel confident we will cut and prepare your glass pieces to fuse into a coaster of your design. The coasters will be taken away to fuse and returned in time for the next session.

Session 3 – Creating Art (Sun Catcher)
In this session we will learn about the beautiful array of patterned and iridescent glass available and how texture can be added to a piece of glass using frits and fusing at different temperatures. We will then cut and prepare our glass to fuse into a sun catcher of your design.

Session 4 – Kiln Carving and Slumping (Make a Trinket Dish)
In this session we will learn how to ‘carve’ into glass and how flat projects can be shaped. We will also learn how to cut a perfect circle and we will finish the session with time to create and make a design that can be used to form a small bowl or trinket dish.

Bring your ideas along for your personal projects and place your orders for glass to create your showpiece in the final weeks

Sessions 5-9 – Freestyle (Your Choice)
By now you should feel confident in working with glass and have a head full of ideas and so this is your chance to create something unique to you. Use some or all of the techniques and skills learned in weeks 1-4 to create a showpiece that you can be proud of.
