The name Maundy Thursday comes from the Latin word mandatum ("commandment"), and is taken from Jesus' words to the disciples in John 13:34, "A new commandment I give to you, that you should love one another, even as I have loved you." This night we celebrate the anniversary of the giving of that new commandment, along with the giving of the Lord's Supper, “something new, until all things are new.”
