"The Novels of Mario Vargas Llosa and the Poetics of Power with Peruvian Novelist Alonso Cueto"
A native of Lima, Peru, Alonso Cueto is the author of novels, short fiction, plays, and essays. Some of his novels include The Blue Hour (2005 Herralde Prize for Novel), El Susurro de la Mujer Ballena (Runner-Up for the 2007 Iberoamericano Planeta/Casa de America Prize), and La Segunda Amante del Rey (Penguin/Random House, 2017). Several of his novels have been made into films. Cueto’s works have been translated into eighteen languages. He has received a Guggenheim Writer’s Grant, the Berlin Anna Seghers Prize, the Inca Garcilaso Medal, and the Peruvian Government Medal for Service to Culture. He received a PhD in Literature from the University of Texas-Austin, and he is a member of the Peruvian Academy of Language.
