“A magician of the podium” (The Guardian), Gianandrea Noseda returns to the Philharmonic for the first time in more than a decade to lead the soaring melodies and shattering climaxes of Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s rarely heard, entrancing music about Russia’s Atlantis. Concertmaster Frank Huang solos in Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto No. 3, with its dazzling flights up the violin and gypsy flourishes.
