Let's Talk TOPA: Nuts and Bolts of the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act

Get Directions

#var:page_name# cover

Tenant groups pursuing the purchase of their apartment buildings with the intention to convert them to cooperatives or condominiums can get financial and technical assistance, thanks to provisions under the District's Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA).

TOPA not only helps residents avoid displacement, but it helps them become homeowners. To make this happen; however, tenant groups must follow certain steps.

Similarly, before a residential property is sold, landlords and realtors must understand the steps they must abide by.

This workshop, sponsored by the Rental Conversion and Sale Division (CASD) of the DC Department of Housing and Community Development, will take tenants, landlords and other housing providers step-by-step through their rights and responsibilities under the law. This will include information on:

Tenant Purchase Rights
Offers of Sale
Tenant Deadlines
Notice of Transfer
Filing a TOPA Complaint

We hope to see you there!
