The variety show is an event hosted by Oakland’s own sassy sister folk trio the T Sisters that showcases local and touring performers in an intimate setting. While primarily featuring a variety of musical performances, past shows have also included dancers, magicians, actors, comedians, improvisation troupes, storytellers, poets, writers, and more.
Not your average talent show or open mic, the variety show is a curated and themed event emcee’d with comic flair by Jonny Meshugenah.
For its first nine years of existence, the variety show developed in Chthonic Theater, a local theater collective founded by the T Sisters and based in their Jingletown warehouse space. The variety show has since outgrown its humble beginnings and has now moved to the lovely East Bay Community Space, formerly Leo’s Audio/Leo’s Nightclub and now a burgeoning home of diverse artistic events.
Oakland’s T Sisters tap into a tradition that hails from folk’s deepest roots - sibling harmony. Distinguished by soaring harmonies, catchy melodies and potent lyricism, the T Sisters’ sound represents a continuum of music: from traditional to pop influences, moments of breathtaking a cappella to swells of energetic indie Americana.
