About the Play:

Thespis Thinks looks at theater politics and the relationships that evolve and sometimes simmer in the theater soup. When two small California theater companies vie for the same arts foundation grant, Board members and production staffs go on the offensive. Nemesis Theater Company hires a smear-merchant and architect of fake news, who, like a political action committee, subverts the narrative about Coastline Theater Company to affect the decision of the Foundation. Coastline’s newly-appointed Artistic Director, widower and Georgia transplant Davis Cotton, struggles to transform this traditional theater company.

The Coastline Board and Associate Artistic Director, Hillary Hampshire, stand in the way of Davis’ vision. Hillary is a woman so entrenched in the theater life, she has left herself no room for experiencing love—until Davis Cotton plucks her heartstrings, one string at a time. But is the song he’s playing real? After all, he hates musicals.

On a second front, two Board members, one each from the two theater companies conspire to wrench away the Foundation grant for themselves. Narrator of this contemporary theater chaos is pundit, play-by-play color commentator and ancient Greek actor, Thespis of Icara.
Roles Pre-cast:

Davis Cotton: (Male Lead Role)
Nona Waugh: (Female Featured Role)
Ron: (Male Supporting Role)

Roles Open:

Hillary Hampshire: (Female Lead) – Coastline Theater Company (CTC) Associate Artistic Director; a complacently single and attractive woman of 40-50; unable to fit her work into decent companionship with the opposite sex.

Miranda Warner: CTC Board member and Marketing Director; New York transplant; rowdy, independent woman of 40-50.

Thespis of Icaria: The historical first Greek actor of the ancient Athens stage; any age over 30; an authoritative and opinionative risk-taker, he fully acknowledges his anachronistic presence. The play’s narrator and pathfinder.

Jerry Slaate: CTC Board member; an opportunistic businessman and two-timing lover; 45-55; he’s smart but not as smart as he thinks he is.

Karen Smith: Nemesis Theater Company (NTC) Board member; a well-liked,
plain-spoken woman; 40-50; but her feelings of inadequacy have affected her ethical judgment by surreptitiously partnering with Jerry Slaate.

Brock Navarro: President of Theater Matters, a theater marketing firm, a wheeler-dealer lobbyist of 35-40; manipulative and conspiratorial, he wears his ego on his sleeve like solid-gold cufflinks and hides his purpose under a garment of deceit like dirty underwear.

Beverly Hillstrom: NTC Artistic Director; a bohemian feminist in her mid- to late-50s;
the woman warrior activist of the worst and rare kind–dishonest, self-serving.

Rehearsals begin Monday, April 23, 2018. Play runs June 1 – July 1, 2018.
