Learn how to harvest cedar trees! This course travels onto State forest lands near Ely to sustainably harvest traditional birch bark canoe building materials by permit. Emphasis is on cultural sacredness of the living forest, ethics of resource extraction, permit process and requirements, identification of quality materials, harvest techniques, field processing and transporting materials. Concentration is on Northern White Cedar.
About the Instructor: Erik Simula is a Finnish-American outdoor educator and master birch bark canoe builder with extensive teaching experience at Voyageur Outward Bound School, Vermilion Community College, North House Folk School, and Ely Folk School where he leads our Birch Bark Canoe Project.
He has experience as a National Park Ranger at Grand Portage National Monument, wilderness mushing guide in Alaska, Lapland, and Minnesota and as a John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Finisher.
