MusicLab vol.2 explores the concept of breath sensing and its wide range of applications from scientific to artistic. All within MusicLab’s unique blend of research and edutainment through hands-on workshops (separate event with registration), intellectual warm-ups, performances and data jockeying.

Breath sensing music is the use of devices and modules to detect and collect breathing features. Recent technological developments allow for non-invasive and portable solutions to collect breathing data, making it easier to quickly and efficiently see and use information from our bodies.

On the 9th of April, researchers from the University of Oslo will be collecting breathing data from both musicians and the audience with state of the art portable breathing sensors, FLOW™.

Breathing patterns from the musicians and the audience can provide information on the level of activity involved in music performance and listening, as well as on entrainment to music, and social interactions.

This time we will experience the performance of opera singer Njål Sparbo, harpist Ellen Bødtker and percussionist Eirik Raude. To warm up our minds we open with an expert discussion with respiratory physiologist Elisabeth Edvardsen, singer and scholar Njål Sparbo and research scientist and one of the guys behind the FLOW sensor Sagar Sen, moderated by music researcher Alexander Refsum Jensenius.

After the gig we invite you to stay for a beer accompanied by data jockeying (live mixing of data recorded during the performance)!

The event is open to everybody and is relevant for students, researchers, musicians, dancers, artists, technicians and others who sometimes marvel at the phenomena of music, physiology, and movement.

Free entrance and open for everyone.
