Join Filmbar and local podcast Cult Film in Review as they host one of the oddest rock operas to ever hit the silver screen, Brian De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise.
A year before The Rocky Horror Picture Show became a mainstay in midnight movie showings across the country, Phantom of the Paradise brought its own infectious musical score to theaters. Although the film never went on to have the type of success as Rocky Horror, the film still maintains a cult following, especially in Winnipeg, Manitoba, home of Phatompalooza, an entire festival dedicated to the film.
The film tells the tale of Winslow Leach, a music composer who has his life’s work stolen by an evil record producer named Swan to open his club, The Paradise. Leach’s attempts to reclaim his work but ends up incarcerated, horribly disfigured, and loses the ability to sing. Eventually, Leach decides to seek revenge on Swan by donning a mask and becoming the Phantom of the Paradise!
After the film, stay for a live show from Cody Everett, Kyle Smith, Chris Wilembrecht, and Mike Sallustio of Cult Film in Review as they discuss this creative cult movie musical and relive some of the film’s best songs.
