Zinfandel — once thought of as the quintessential American or Californian wine grape — has been genetically linked to southern Italy's Primativo grape, which in turn has been traced to Croatia's Crljenak Kaštelanski, a.k.a. Tribidrag. But regardless of its European origins, "zin" seems most at home in the warm, sunny vineyards of California. But even in its adopted homeland, zinfandel enjoys a range of expressions. In cooler-climate regions, zins tend to be boldly fruit-forward, with a raspberry, jam-like aromas. While in the warmer regions the grape produces a wine flavored with notes of anise, blackberry and pepper.
In this class we'll cover the broad spectrum of expressions that zinfandel/primitivo has to offer, tasting through as many as a dozen examples of both 'Old World' Italian primitivo and 'New World' styles from across California in all their full-bodied glory. Join Larry Ciolorito, Rob Garretson and the finewine.com team as we taste as many as a dozen outstanding zinfandel-based wines that are great examples of why these wines are so popular. Light foods to compliment the wines will also be served. At this class you will:
