Welcome to the Finnbrit film club’s showing of Bright Star (PG).
A contemporary portrait of the tragic life of early nineteenth century poet John Keats, famous for his Odes, 'on a Grecian Urn' and 'on a Nightingale' and other love poems.
New Zealand director, Jane Campion (The Piano 1993, Holy Smoke 1999, Top of the Lake 2013) wrote the screenplay and takes up the story of Keats' dramatic love affair with Fanny Tawnie. The rigours of artistic life result in Keats contracting TB, and after a painful farewell with Fanny he travels to Italy where he dies. Fanny is left with the consolation of a poem Keats had written for her, Bright Star. The two leading roles are played by Ben Whishaw and Abby Cornish.
