Beltaine is also known as May Day and is the celebration of the beginning of summer according to the old Celtic calendar. A fire festival, there are 9 sacred woods associated with Beltaine: alder, ash, birch, hawthorn, hazel, holly, oak, rowan and willow. Bonfires, feasting and dancing around the maypole are well known customs for this festival. Hearth fires were extinguished on May Eve and re-lit the next day from the sacred Beltaine fires. Also a fertility festival, Beltaine celebrates the abundance of nature.
