For the next Music on Park Street Concert, organist Jeremy Thompson with members of Plena Voce Chamber Choir will present Music for Holy Week by Franz Liszt. The program will feature a rare performance of Liszt’s Via Crucis, or “Way of the Cross,” a late work that follows the meditational practice of the Stations of the Cross. Liszt is best known as one of the greatest touring virtuosos of all time, but later in life he took minor orders in the church and developed a much more restrained compositional style that was highly progressive for his era. The Via Crucis is a powerful experience weaving together ancient chants, Latin hymns, and a highly chromatic and ascetic musical language.
The concert will be held on March 27 at 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street. Admission is free, and ample parking is available. For more information, contact the church at 434-296-7131 or go to www.FirstPresCharlottesville.org.
