The ability of emergency personnel to recognize the symptoms of dementia and knowing how to reduce the stress response is critical to a safe, successful outcome to an encounter. This session teaches Fire, EMT, Paramedics, ER Personnel, and dispatchers how to recognize what happens to the brain in dementia, differentiate dementia and delirium, and how to best handle challenging situations. Participants will practice using a Positive Physical Approach™ in interactions for improved outcomes, and how to best communicate with a person living with dementia to help them to cooperate and follow instructions for the safety of all involved. Registration is encouraged but not required.

Beth A.D. Nolan, Ph.D. works for Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach™ to Care (PAC), a training and advocacy organization offering techniques used by professionals and families working or living with dementia or other brain changes. Dr. Nolan now serves as a Lead Mentor Trainer and Coach, and directs research at PAC, working to improve skills to help caregivers become care partners.
