Every day seven people die in home fires across the nation and sadly, most of those homes do not have working smoke alarms. The Red Cross wants to improve the odds and save lives - that’s why we launched Sound the Alarm, a community-wide effort to install free smoke alarms, educate families on the importance of home fire safety, and ultimately #EndHomeFires.
On Saturday, April 28, in partnership with community organizations, the Red Cross will:
- Canvass at-risk neighborhoods
- Install free smoke alarms
- Provide fire prevention and safety education
And you can help!
You can join this incredible effort to save lives right here in our own community on April 28, when we hope to install 400 free smoke alarms in Santa Barbara homes. Sound like A LOT of alarms in a single day? It is! That's why we need your help. Sign up to volunteer as an installer, educator or documenter. No experience is necessary; day-of training provided. Register at soundthealarm.org.
What can you expect the day of the event?
There are two shifts available:
All day shift from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Morning shift from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Volunteers will be organized into teams and will spend the day installing smoke alarms and educating residents on how to create an escape plan.
Volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothing for walking outdoors.
Drinks, snacks, and lunch will be provided!
This event is generously sponsored by our partners in preparedness, Southern California Edison and CMC.
