What is Zydeco?
Zydeco is a musical genre that evolved in rural southwest Louisiana by French Creoles which blends up-beat blues, rhythm and blues, French Cajun music and other music indigenous to the Louisiana.
Usually fast tempo and dominated by the button or piano accordion and a rubboard, zydeco music was originally created at house dances, where families and friends gathered for socializing.
Today, zydeco integrates genres such as R&B, soul, brass band, reggae, hip hop, ska, rock, and other styles, in addition to the traditional forms.
The great thing about the dance is that its an eight-count syncopated beat can be used for any eight-count song, and can be danced fast or slow and sexy, flamboyantly or so small you're hardly moving. Its a great energy-conserving dance.
Deane Nettles has been dancing zydeco since 1992 and has danced at festivals in Louisiana and all over the country.
Come learn this fun dance and join this fun community. Zydeco/Cajun bands are here, monthly... so Let’s dance!
