Bassist Chris Orsinger leads a foray into the dimensions of Soul in Jazz. The artistry of Leon Russell, Horace Silver, Stevie Wonder, Wayne Shorter and other composers offer varied perspectives on the nature of this irrepressible human essence.
Orsinger, a co-founder of The Jazz Station, performs acoustic bass with energy and passion, creating rhythmic foundations and harmonic depth. Dave O’Toole tells tall tales on alto saxophone with quieter expressions on flute, while guitarist Brian Toon brings his gleaming harmonies and tasty melodic chops to the party.
Guest vocalist Amy Jones adds lyrical dimensions with soulful vocal interludes, including Leon Russell’s “Masquerade,” Stevie Wonder’s “Visions” and the gorgeous ballad “Never Let Me Go,” which harkens to memorable recordings by Shirley Horn and other master interpreters.
Saxophonist Wayne Shorter’s compositions provide rich veins of soulful jazz that will be mine, such as an undulating rendition of the rarely-performed “Fall” and giant talent evident in innovative compositions, “Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum.” The compositions of pianist Horace Silver, the “Grandpop of Hard Bop” and saxophonist Wayne Shorter compositions provide rich veins of soulful jazz that the band will mine.
SoulJazz Trio performs sans drummer. This “chamber jazz” approach offers a greater role for each musician to create diverse soundscapes and inspired improvisations in realms ranging from hypnotic Latin Jazz, effervescent bebop, poignant blues and infectious swing—always striving to channel the essence of Soul in Jazz.
“Pain the forge, Love the anvil and Fate the hammer shape a resilient soul.”
