This body of work started with a desire to create a fresh visual vernacular. I returned to the figurative and I started on paper. I tend to start sculpture concepts on paper because of the spontaneity paper allows. I developed my new vocabulary of gesture and form on paper that I later committed to paint and steel.
“Flat gesture sculptures” was not a term in my artistic lexicon but as my work became more abstract, I created a new series of gesture sculptures on paper. These sculptures were asserting the literal flatness of the paper. I continued to “think flat” as I explored with cut paper, paint and steel, the evocation of gesture and movement in sculpture in a conceptually single dimension. As I placed a number of those gesture sculptures in scale-less dreamscapes, my aesthetic began to take on a life of its own.
Though still thinking flat, I am currently shifting focus towards the natural process of decay and the concept of cyclical change. This was inspired by one day discovering broken sculptures in my storage unit when I was packing to move. All part of the banalities of moving and unpacking. I liked the new look. Something made me start creating a series of broken sculptures perhaps wondering if I might one day find them reassembled in storage…
