Avian Illustration Workshop with Justin Gibbens
In this hands-on introductory course, students will learn basic approaches to observation drawing and illustration by examining bird plumages, bird skeletons and taxidermy mounts. Using a Chinese fine-line approach to naturalistic rendering, students will then practices basic watercolor techniques including dry brush feather details, glazing, and composition.
Students will have one or more finished watercolor sketches by the end of this afternoon course. Students are welcome to bring sketchbooks. All painting supplies will be provided. No prior experience necessary.
Justin Gibbens was trained in both scientific illustration and traditional Chinese painting, a skill set he employs in his subversive zoological drawings. He received his BA in art from Central Washington University in 1998 and a Scientific Illustration Certificate from the University of Washington in 2003. Gibbens was the recipient of a 2006 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award and a 2008 Artist Trust Fellowship Award. He has shown throughout the Northwest and nationally. He is represented by G. Gibson Gallery in Seattle, WA and Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, OR. His work has been collected by Grinnell College, Microsoft, 4Culture/King County, City of Seattle and the Washington State Arts Consortium. Gibbens lives in rural Thorp, WA.
