Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra - GPO supporters have for the last 4 years been treated to outstanding annual Opera Galas at Brooklyn Theatre. Local and international opera singers have performed in these these galas featuring the most popular opera arias, duets etc.
The brilliant Conservatoire Choir from the Potchefstroom University, teamed up in with the GPO for Mendelssohn’s Choral Symphony (2016) as well as the Mozart Requiem (2017). GPO Artistic Director, Willem Vogel thought it a good idea to invite this choir to perform in an Opera Chorus programme, but at the same time, featuring some of the brilliant graduates from this opera school.
The soloists featured in this programme have been involved in the DIS OPERA project. This is an Opera Gala with various soloists and choir, presented by Wouter de Wet, in charge of a programme of the same name on Sunday nights on Monitor en Spektrum op RSG. DIS OPERA was presented at Aardklop in 2017 and will also be staged at KKNK 2018.
The leading soloist for this years GPO Opera Gala is the coloratura soprano, Ilze Coetzee. Ilze has made quite a name for herself in full operatic productions for Brooklyn Theatre. These roles have included: The Queen of the night in The Magic Flute (Mozart) , The title role in Lucia di Lammermoor (Donizetti), Gilda in Rigoletto-WAD (Verdi), Donna Anna in Don Giovanni The Opera (Mozart), both leading ladies in Die Fledermaus (Strauss). Her portrayal of Violetta in La Traviata (Verdi) in 2017 was truly remarkable.
In this Opera Gala the NWU Consevatoire Choir joins Ilze for the famous Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor as well as Casta Diva from NORMA - Bellini OPERA. Ilze is due to sing the complete role of Norma for SALON MUSIC in July 2018.
Famous opera choruses by Verdi, such as the Grand March past from Aïda, The Slaves Chorus from Nabucco and the Anvil Chorus - Il Trovatore are featured side, by side with opera choruses which feature soloists, such as Come gentil from Don Pasquale (Donizetti) and of course the Grand Finale of the programme, namely the Easter Hymn from Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascagni).
The German conductor, Adam Szmidt will be on the podium in front of the GPO for the 2nd time this year. Szmidt is also a highly experienced operatic repetiteur and Studienleiter, which makes him the perfect candidate to take charge of this very exciting Opera Gala.
