Every little thing we say or do impacts the way girls see themselves, limiting messages and stereotypes have been holding girls back for far too long.
“That’s pretty good for a girl.”
“You shouldn’t be so bossy.”
“Why are you being so emotional?”
She’s already being put in the “Girl Box” – a confining societal boundary of conflicting messages about how she should act, who she should be, and creating competition and comparison with her peers.
But even awareness of the effect of these messages isn’t enough of a defense against them. Not for a vulnerable pre-teen in the throes of peer pressure and puberty, and sometimes not even for an adult woman with a strong awareness of how these messages manipulate our self-view.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
At Girls on the Run, we are redefining the “Girl Box!”
