Le Nozze di Figaro - Bloomsbury Opera
sung in Italian with English surtitles

This new production of the Mozart/da Ponte classic puts the audience at the centre of the action. Staged in the 1930s, the date our historic venue was built, the resonances between the change in the '30s, that which Mozart and da Ponte felt during their lifetimes, and that of our own time are palpable. We dive into the middle of a world that is anything but old fashioned. Figaro is a story about change, but also about love, jealously and forgiveness. As Count Almaviva struggles to give up his privilege in favour of a more equitable society, he grapples with the issues of entitlement and civil society that are so of the present moment it is uncanny. Opera has the unique ability to let us travel through time and uncover that we are not alone in the challenges that we face. Join us for an unforgettable wedding on a stage so close you can reach out and touch the action. It's opera like nowhere else.

The cast features an extraordinary mix of the finest young singers in the world, representing seven countries around the globe, lead by Madison Nonoa as Susanna. Husband and wife team Barbara and Michael Poll direct and conduct: the former has directed operas for London's Cockpit Theatre, Tête-tête, and abroad in Italy and has assisted some of Britain's finest directors including David Pountney and John LaBouchadiere. The latter is completing his fourth year conducting the Goodensemble Orchestra and is a Junior Fellow at the Guildhall School. Michael Poll has served as assistant conductor for operas in the United States and Italy, and his debut recording of Bach Suites will be released by Orchid Classics in April.
