While day zero has officially been moved to 2019, we are still facing a serious drought with serious short and long term effects. We need holistic solutions to transcend the current paradigm of water scarcity, and to keep flushing away precious water simply because day zero has been kicked down the road is not an ideal approach. Should we face day zero in the future, a major public health concern is that of human waste disposal (feces and urine - aka 'humanure'). When there's no water to flush your toilets, do you have an excretion contingency plan in place? Potential risks of disease spreading by inadequate sanitation and ablution has health officials alarmed, and many are uncertain as to how they'll do their 'business' should our taps run dry.
Thankfully there is a simple, regenerative solution to this, one which closes the loop of our nutrient/waste cycle, requiring no added water to operate, while at the same time building soil (and the capacity of our landscapes to retain moisture) and creating major economic opportunity.
Come share in this collaborative workshop as we explore:
Human waste as a resource
Compost toilet basics - collection and processing systems
Building a compost toilet (practical)
Composting and worm farming your waste (demo)
Best practice and safety concerns
This is a participatory and practical workshop where you'll leave equipped with everything you need for building and using your own compost toilet.
