The internationally acclaimed Los Angeles Clarinet Choir, a group of 15 clarinetists performing on soprano, sopranino, alto, bass and contrabass instruments under the direction of conductors Margaret Thornhill and Victoria Ramos, will present a program of new music and old favorites. The concert features three new original works: the prizewinning "Meditation and Funk," by Pacific Northwest composer Sean Osborn, "Introduction and Groove" by Texas composer Clif Jameson Jones, and a lively samba-choro, "Chamegando" by Brazilian composer Julião Adelino Barbosa. Dmitri Shostakovich's stirring "Festive Overture" arranged for clarinets by Anthony Brackett will open the program, and there will be a show-and-tell of the various instruments featuring multiple soloists midway through the event. The concert is suitable for all ages, and admission is free.
The Los Angeles Clarinet Choir is considered one of the foremost clarinet ensembles in North America, with featured performances at the International Clarinet Association ClarinetFests in 2007 in Vancouver, British Columbia; 2010 in Austin, Texas; 2011 at CSU Northridge, and 2017 in Orlando Florida. Recipients of grants from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, they have played for standing-room-only appearances at the South Pasadena Eclectic Music Festival and for concert series, colleges, schools, libraries, churches and senior residences throughout the Southland. The group specializes in performing and commissioning new original works for this unusual combination and has presented many U.S. and World premieres.
