Dubuque Main Street (DMS), in collaboration with Main Street Iowa (MSI), presents Jason Roberts. Hailing from Garland, Texas, Roberts initiated the Better Block Project in 2010 and visits to introduce the concept to the Central Avenue Corridor in Dubuque. Better Block Projects have taken place around the country and focus on revitalizing a neighborhood block in about a day to demonstrate the potential the block possesses with some targeted improvements. Bringing this now national trend to Iowa, DMS and MSI invite the community to attend Roberts’ presentation at Heartland Financial USA, Inc., 1301 Central (Entrance in the rear of building) at 6 P.M. Following Roberts’ presentation, attendees will engage in a “mock/mini” Better Block on the 1800 Block of Central Avenue to demonstrate Streetscape components of a successful Better Block.
The Better Block Project (a.k.a. Build a Better Block (BABB)) works to provide a vision for the potential of an underserved area by attracting pop-up shops, hosting unique and engaging community events, hosting community educational workshops and building eye catching and pedestrian friendly streetscape.
Dubuque is one of five communities participating in this “mock” build out through guidance of MSI. In the fall 2018, DMS appears to be the only Main Street organization in Iowa completing a full-scale Better Block Project. We invite the community to engage in our April 17 exercise to provide DMS with the “next level” tools to assist our fall week-long project. We ask for “all hands on deck” to demonstrate the community interest in visualizing the Potential on Central.
