This biographical musical comedy-drama stars Natalie Wood as the “one of a kind” Gypsy Rose Lee (1911-1970), an awkward girl with humble beginnings who turned into the most famous stripper and entertainer in burlesque history, and Rosalind Russell as Mama Rose, the monstrous stage mother of all stage mothers who pushed her daughter to the top. Released in 1962 at the peak of Wood’s movie stardom, Gypsy is considered one of the great American stage musicals. Boasting the glitz and glamour of showbiz, the film also exposes a seedy and corrupt world where fame, by all means necessary, is the only thing that counts.
